This business of turning our schools and communities into killing fields is a malignancy of more recent times and the byproduct of a dysfunctional society as well as the efforts of a gun lobby and the interpretation of the 2nd Amendment that makes all of this horror possible.

As these horrific tragedies continue to revisit our communities, it begs the question to our leaders, “Is this what you wanted?” I always think, be careful what you build, you may not like it. It seems well past the time to take a close look at what our leaders have built. It is definitely not some shining city on a hill, or if this is an example of America being exemplary as our leaders often like to crow, then heaven help us, we need to be less exemplary.

We have the power, ability, and resources to fix us. It just takes the will to do it. Those that benefit from our current demise need to lose our confidence and votes. There are many in our government that deserve to be shunned by all of us. These are the folks that have done nothing to fix our problems and continue to refuse to help.

New laws, if needed, and regulations are far preferable to turning our communities into killing fields like we do now. To do nothing again leaves no other conclusion than we are mentally ill as a society. Our Constitution was not handed down by God. It has had some serious defects that have needed repair in the past – like slavery. If we need to repair the 2nd Amendement, then do it. As it stands, it is not acceptable or tolerable. I am tired of listening to elected leaders defend a situation that would only make Satan himself happy, and maybe, that’s what we built. Be careful what you build.

I am a Vermonter, been one all my life. That just about tells you all you need to know. I am not much of a follower and like to do my own thinking. I value my family and a quiet existence in a very rural part of Vermont. There is a lot in the world I do not understand. My writing is my attempt to wrap my head around much that is swirling around me. Some time ago gasoline pumps changed to the way they look now. I had stopped to fill my Jeep and I could not get the gas to pump to save my life. I went inside and complained to the attendant. She knew me and said, "Ed, the whole world is changing and if you don't figure out the changes you are going to fall off the earth as it spins around." Well, I am not always successful figuring out the changes, but my writing is my way of working through some of them. I hope you enjoy.
